Our Journey To Dragonfly Cottage: Part One

Like so many of us, the pandemic had us reevaluating our lifestyle. We have been enamored with mountain living for years and love the peace and tranquility of a more rural setting. We started our second home journey years ago by exploring other mountain towns such as Whitefish, Montana. However, we quickly realized despite being paradise, that the distance was too much of a challenge to navigate effectively from New York.

Our quest for a mountain lifestyle while still being close to civilization brought us to the charming town of Manchester, Vermont. It is the quintessential New England town, complete with covered bridges, fieldstone walls and old barns. Manchester is easily accessible to the rest of the Northeast but tucked into the Green Mountains in the picturesque Battenkill River Valley. It’s close to three ski mountains, has 5-star hotels, restaurants and world-class shopping! We had found our perfect mountain town!

Finding the perfect town was half the battle, now we had to find a house! Houses were selling as soon as they hit the market. We were missing house after house and continually outbid. It looked as if our dream of mountain living was going to be short lived. However, early one morning a funky little 70’s A frame came to market. It needed work (little did we know how much) but the bones were there, and it had massive potential. We took a leap of faith and put in an offer sight unseen, and it was accepted!

EEK! Driving to Vermont to sign contracts and see the house for the first time was scary. The sellers were a lovely elderly couple who had accumulated decades of memories in the home. Among their possessions were dragonfly sun-catchers, dragonfly magnets, dragonfly pictures, dragonflies were everywhere.

A sneak peak of what the house looked like before:

If you know the story of how Lola Tucker Interiors got its name, you know my Mom passed of ALS and the company is named in honor of her. (If you don’t know the story, please check it out here. My Mom loved dragonflies so much that as she was dying, I said I would get a tattoo of a dragonfly so that she would always be with me. I did and she is. Walking into a house that we bought sight unseen was terrifying but once I saw dragonflies everywhere, I knew it was all going to be ok.
